This coffee comes from a group of 44 farmers in Daanisa, a community in the Oddo Shakiso district of Guji. The name daanisa refers to a native umbrella-shaped tree, valued here for the shade it casts over the region’s coffee trees. Like most Ethiopian smallholders, these farmers work plots of under 5 hectares using traditional methods, with no chemical fertilisers or pesticides.

Guji’s region sits in the southern Ethiopian highlands, where steep terrain, ample rainfall, and altitudes regularly exceeding 2,000 masl create near-perfect conditions for arabica. The variety grown here, JARC 74112, was developed by Ethiopia’s Jimma Agricultural Research Centre. It is known to be well suited to these high elevations andcontributes to the lot’s bright, fruit-forward character.

At the station, the ripe coffee cherries are floated to remove defects, then sun-dried whole on raised African beds for two to three weeks. This dry method allows the bean to absorb the sugars and flavors of the fruit, giving the coffee its signature juicy, jammy sweetness.
