This coffee is produced at the Kii Factory, one of three mills owned and operated by the Rung’eto Farmers Cooperative Society in the Kirinyaga region, at the foot of Mount Kenya.
Built in 1995, the factory takes its name from the Kii river alongside it. Today, 850 smallholders deliver ripe cherry to Kii, each farming an average of 250 trees on less than hectare of land. The factory itself sits in one of Kenya’s renowned coffee growing regions. Nutrient-rich volcanic soils, a consistent supply of fresh water from mountain streams, and high elevation combine to create ideal conditions for arabica cultivation. Clean water from the nearby Kii River is used throughout the washing process, contributing to the clarity and precision the region is known for.
The blend brings together four distinct varieties, Batian, SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11. The SL selections, developed in Kenya decades ago, are celebrated for their complex fruit character and bright acidity. Ruiru 11 and Batian, a more recent hybrid bred for resilience, adds body and consistency to the blend. Fully washed processing keeps the cup clean and transparent, letting the terroir and varietal character speak clearly.
